Be safe when out and about

  • Look confident
  • Be alert
  • Avoid confrontation
  • Hold your head high
  • Know where you are going and how you're going to get there
  • Avoid danger spots, such as badly lit areas, subways, car parks, deserted buildings, waste ground or alleyways
  • Follow your instincts – if you feel uncomfortable in a situation, get yourself out of it IMMEDIATELY
  • Call out for help - shout FIRE
  • Ask for help at a nearby house or shop
  • Keep anything of value out of sight – i.e. purses, mobile phones, jewellery
  • Don't leave valuables on view in locked cars – put them in the boot or hide them
  • Try not to walk along talking on your mobile phone
  • Don't put yourself in danger for the sake of a few minutes – short cuts can be dangerous
  • Keep valuables in different places – keep cheque books away from cheque cards and try not to keep money in one place
  • Make sure you know the number of a reputable local taxi company
  • Walk confidently and at a good pace

  • Always walk facing oncoming traffic
