Safety Tips
  • Be aware that people are not always what they seem
  • Always tell someone where you are going
  • If there's a change of plan – let someone know
  • NEVER get into a strangers car or go anywhere with a stranger
  • Cross the road if you think you're being followed
  • Ask for help from a kind looking passer by e.g. an older woman or a young mum with kids if possible
  • Look confident
  • Be alert
  • Avoid confrontation
  • Hold your head high
  • Know where you are going and how you're going to get there
  • AVOID danger spots, such as badly lit areas, subways, car parks, deserted buildings, waste ground or alleyways
  • Follow your instincts – if you feel uncomfortable in a situation, get yourself out of it IMMEDIATELY
  • Call out for help
  • Keep anything of value out of sight – i.e. purses, mobile phones, jewellery – have mobile phones on silent/vibrate
  • If possible stay in a groups with your friends
  • Try not to walk along talking/texting on your mobile phone this can make you vulnerable
  • Don't put yourself in danger for the sake of a few minutes – short cuts can be dangerous
  • Keep valuables in different places – try not to keep money in one place
  • Make sure you know the number of a good local taxi company
  • Take strong strides and walk at a good pace
  • Carry a whistle or a personal alarm. To get a personal alarm, talk to anyone from R U OK? Who may be able to give you one or will let you know where to get one.
  • Shout out "help" if someone grabs you or makes you feel uncomfortable
  • ALWAYS TELL about bullying – if no–one listens at first TELL someone else and KEEP TELLING!
  • When using the internet never give out personal info or email address (either your own or other people's) especially in chat rooms. Be aware that some adults misuse chat rooms. Never agree to meet an internet friend on your own. They may be very different in person from online. If they are genuine they will understand your caution.
